Dimensions: 4 x 6 Media: archival watercolor pigments on 300 lb. Arches watercolor paper Artist Statement : My work centers on spaces from my imagination that reflect reality but don't represent it, much like a dream. Another Monday Morning was inspired by what years ago, was considered the traditional day for doing laundry. The laundry part was a lot of fun to paint, deciding on colors and patterns for each item. The landscape around the laundry evolved and grew as I painted, and is also just a bit of fun and not at all traditional.
Dimensions: 4 x 6 Media: Reduction Blockprint. Artist Statement : My friend asked me to do a picture of her horse who is now 24 years old. I thought of doing one with her in it, but ended up with this view where her intimate presence (also implied in the title) can be imagined as they go crossing this glorious field of sunflowers. She had to remind me that the mane is always on the right side of the neck, just as the rider always mounts from the left.
I was excited, anticipating the 2 dark colors of her horse against the brilliant yellow of the field.
Dimensions: 4 x 6 Media: Reduction Blockprint Artist Statement : A few weeks after I had been in the garden drawing the sunflowers, I went back in to draw; it was by now the time of tomatoes and tithonias. Butterflies were all around, so I sat with them and watched. I had recently been to a small show of Japanese block prints and, subliminally, I guess, had taken in the plaid design of some of the fabrics and the effect of the women and their drapery against a white background. My own effort is so crude, but I was pleased with the idea of adding a tomato cage, a grid as in plaid.... and the colors I chose, red, blue, yellow, and black also harked back to the Edo prints.
Dimensions: 6 x 3.5 x 3.5 Media: Amboyna Burl wood and lacquer Artist Statement : I enjoy working in recycled wood, preserving the beauty of nature that surrounds all of us. This gives new and different life to elements of nature that would otherwise be destroyed forever.
There is art all around us every day in our world, but it is often covered up or disguised so that it goes unnoticed by most people. It is up to the artist to discover what others have missed, and present it in a surprising manner that hopefully will open the eyes of others to what is around them. Often the surface of the wood is dirty, rotted and perforated with worm and insect tunnels. When the bad surface wood is cut away, beautiful interesting wood is exposed. In effect, the wood is reborn.
I then cut further into the wood, forming and shaping it, and bringing it back to a new life. The cycle of life continues in the world with each generation bringing new ways and ideas.
