A few weeks after I had been in the garden drawing the sunflowers, I went back in to draw; it was by now the time of tomatoes and tithonias. Butterflies were all around, so I sat with them and watched. I had recently been to a small show of Japanese block prints and, subliminally, I guess, had taken in the plaid design of some of the fabrics and the effect of the women and their drapery against a white background. My own effort is so crude, but I was pleased with the idea of adding a tomato cage, a grid as in plaid.... and the colors I chose, red, blue, yellow, and black also harked back to the Edo prints.
